Glossary
1. VESA. These are the initials of the Video Electronics Standards Association, an international organisation with worldwide membership. A not-for-profit body, it promotes the development of technical standards for electronic consumer equipment and associated, ancillary equipment such as television wall mounts, encouraging common interfaces in such basic, but vital elements as fixing points.
2. Cantilever TV Stand: Cantilever means it is anchored or secured at one end only, leaving the other end free. In the case of a TV stand it provides the strong bottom base, leaving the vertical section free to mount the television or shelving on. An example of a cantilever is a swimming pool springboard, anchored to the poolside but free at the end you dive off.
3. Cantilever TV Wall Mount: In this case it is the wall fixing that provides the secure mounting for the arm of the mount on which the television is fixed.
4. Shelf Pitch: Not the best industry phrase, but essentially it relates to the height of the shelf or shelves that sit beneath the top of the stand or cabinet on which the television sits.
5. Max Weight / Max Load Capacity: Fairly self-explanatory. Weight and load capacity are one and the same. So, don’t put a 30kg on a TV wall mount or TV stand that is only rated at 20kg. Check your television and equipment weights so you make the correct choice. Don’t suffer an expensive accident!
6. UV Bonded Surface: A UV – Ultra-Violet – bonded surface is a technique that creates an extra strong glass surface in a much lighter form than might otherwise be achieved.
7. Cable Management Facility: Does what it says. Helps to keep television and other cables from electronic equipment – decoder, DVD player etc. – tucked away and out of sight, so you don’t have ‘spaghetti’ wires trailing all over the place.
8. Swivel Angle: This is the adjustment you can make horizontally. It is also called the pivot point. You can simply swivel the television left or right to suit where you want to sit and watch your favourite programmes. Some items can swivel 90 degrees. Be sure to choose the one that is right for your needs.
9. Tilt Angle: This enables the adjustment of the television vertically. Check the specification of the item you are buying to make sure the amount of tilt is right for you.
10. Rotation adjustment: This is the ability to swivel the television rather like the swivel or pivot facility in a TV wall mount, but in this case rotation relates to a TV Ceiling Mount.
11. Articulated: You may see this described as a ‘scissor action’ on TV wall mounts, which is what it is. It enables you to pull the television forward or push it back towards a wall and in most cases to swivel the arm left and right and even tilt it up or down. These are among the most flexible TV wall mounts.
12. AV Furniture: The days of merely having functional television cabinets are past. We can spend many hours enjoying the programmes on our television. We have chosen our personal furniture with care. So, we need our television to play an integral part in how our room is set out. Today, TV cabinets, often with a bespoke design, offer functionality with style, a choice of colours and finishes. In our ranges there will always be something that is perfect for you.
13. Veneer: A veneer is the finish of your TV Unit, TV Stand or TV wall mount. It may be a wood veneer or a just as stylish black finish. Often veneers are balanced with the form, colour and style of glass that is part of the design. The choice is yours, so enjoy browsing our site to find your perfect finish.
14. IR / Remote Friendly Glass: It may seem like magic. In a way it is, but it’s good magic for you. This is glass that allows the infrared signal from your remote handset to pass through to change programme, sound, record - whatever. So, no more having to wave the remote at floor level to get a reaction from your equipment! All TV Stands that we sell are that have a glass front door on them should be fitted with IR Freindly glass - check the description if you are not sure
15. White Glove Delivery Service: This a bit like what you see in those classy antique shows, where the expert handles a priceless item without a risk of it being marked. Our Service is similar. We take very great care when we deliver your purchases to your home to ensure they are in perfect condition for you to enjoy right away - Only available at present with BDI TV Units
16. “Piano Black”: This is the amazing finish used to describe the glass that brings your television stand to life. One or more ‘piano black’ shelves in your TV stand or TV cabinet bring elegance and sophistication to your viewing.
17. Toughened Safety Glass: You’ll find this – also called tempered glass - in a variety of uses, for example, your shower door or the side and rear windows on a car. It is glass that is heat or chemically treated, so, should it be broken it crumbles into small pieces rather than splits into dangerous shards as with regular glass.
18. Low Profile: This is about design that embraces subtlety in its manufacture. The base of a TV stand for example will have a slim, low profile, so visually it is pleasing on the eye.
