Looking to Mount your TV and Not sure where to start?

You've just bought that new LCD TV and are now sat thinking that would look really nice mounted on the wall, you start searching through the internet and all of a sudden your amazed by the amount of choices available to you. How do you know which one to get? Which one best meets your needs?

There are several key pointers to bear in mind when you start shopping, and its a good idea to make a list of some of the important specifications of your new TV before you start. One of the main factors to be taken into consideration is the actual weight of the Tv itself, this should be available in the manufacturers specification either in the manual that came with your television or on the manufacturers website. It is very important that the actual bracket that you purchase is designed to have a safe working load over and above the weight of the TV. Don't skimp here and go for a bracket whose maximum weight is close to that of the actual television or you will regret it later.

Probably the next key point to consider is what functionality you actually want from the bracket itself, different types of bracket offer different levels of movement or in some cases none at all. A big factor in making this decision is knowing where you are going to mount the bracket in the first place. For example if you are mounting it to a chimney breast or a large flat wall then you would probably want to consider a flat or tilt type mount, whereas if its to be mounted in a corner or an alcove then definately consider the Tilt and Swivel or Cantilever type mounts.

Flat Wall Mounts are the most limiting of the brackets in this aspect, they hold the TV flush to the wall, but don't allow any change in the horizontal or vertical angle. Because of their lack of flexibility these brackets tend to be among the cheaper style to purchase, and a good point to consider is where your cables need to be plugged in to the TV as they can make access a little awkward.

Tilt Brackets are very similar to the Flat Wall Mount in that they still hold the TV flush to the wall, similar issues can occur with these styles. The main advantage over the Flat Wall Mount is that Tilt Wall Mounts as their name suggests give you a degree of movement away from the wall. Some allow this movement in one plane normally down whereas the more complex ones will allow movement in two planes.

Tilt and Swivel Brackets add a little more complexity and allow the TV to be moved from side to side as well as being tilted up and down, these style brackets are very good for positioning the TV in the corner of a room as they allow it to be folded back when not in use.

The most complex of the brackets are the Cantilever style Wall Mounts, these have much more elaborate mechanisms for maximum flexibility, allowing the Screen to be pulled out from the wall, panned from side to side and tilted. They are well suited to mounting the TV in an alcove where it can be pulled out for optimum viewing for example.

The final point to consider before your purchase is how the bracket actually fits onto the TV itself, most modern TV's in the small to mid range will utilise a standard developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), whereas the bigger TV's will have differing hole positions. All of these details should be available either in the manufacturers manual or on their websites.
